The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of activities much better than scanning the headlines: unwrapping gifts, getting stuffed on holiday treats, and harnessing deep breathing to avoid snapping at loved ones. It is wished you managed to enjoy all these things and more. That said, the entertainment world doesn't take a break, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. A slew of thrilling announcements emerged during the festive period, and just in case you missed a few, here is a summary of the juiciest bits.
Without a doubt the most surprising revelation, the notorious troubled production that was the third season of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to stop the series' continuation. Season 3 will come back with a subsequent part in 2027—such a distant date they easily could have labeled it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will continue to be in charge. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the start, which could be taken as a hopeful indicator. But, the main art for the continuation is identical to the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This suggests that, by now, they must be mocking the fans.
Kyoto Animation has built a name for being an prestigious animation studio, making its mark not just for the exceptional quality of its productions but for the good working conditions of its employees—a rarity in the industry. Surprisingly, until now, it had not adapted an anime adapted from a manga published in Shonen Jump, arguably the best-known magazine in the field. Ruri Dragon will break that tradition, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became massive popularity when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the mangaka's health issues. When it came back with a reduced workload, the series showed it still retained the fans' affection and positive sentiment, and now everyone is overjoyed about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the highly popular, epic Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only recently got an English localization, but the anime has been going on for some time, and season 6 was another excellent entry. Apparently that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as currently being made, and it will probably debut in 2026.
One more studio famous for the excellent quality of its work, Science Saru has delivered masterpieces of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an prominent woman and thinker in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and captivating visual style, which reminds me a bit of Ranking of Kings. Set to premiere in July 2026, this one will without a doubt be on my list of anticipated shows.
Right after the release of its twenty-fourth episode, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be receiving a follow-up. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will delve into the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm air date has yet to be revealed.
