Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Climax

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
