Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
