Did Sony done it again? In the wake of the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million milestone worldwide, attaining a worldwide gross of $108 million in its opening frame. This feature surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in $18.2M in North America after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film added $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million under Sony (over $43 million international, $18.2M domestic). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.
Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, contrasting the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the U.S. and Canada in the year 2022 and debuted with a comparable eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. Reze Arc’s first weekend aligns with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6 million total earnings. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will match the box office of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the distributor.
Along with its affiliate the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to propel their leadership at the cinema for anime films. This film's promotional efforts began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a major presence at NYCC including behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. There was even an exclusive fan screening for the public and content creators as well after the last day of the gathering.
This year marks a significant period for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional feature-length anime premiering in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
