Chicago's MLB Team Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement features a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for finishing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, joins a young group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that drove in teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The following day in the title match against the United States, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent championship win.

The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
