Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in defense or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and defend this founding document," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our constitution."
The video message reportedly trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a combined statement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our nation with great loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme online messages and retract his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
The representatives who participated in the video also published a statement.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this nation and made an vow to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the national charter and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must come together and censure the former president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that's historic in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and establish all that."
During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official stated. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
