Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who escaped after the explosion was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official thought the detonation had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
