Glasgow Warriors kicked off their Champions Cup campaign in ideal fashion with a crucial four-try win on the road against Sale Sharks.
Taking advantage of the elements at their backs, Sale started the brighter and built a 14-0 advantage within the first quarter. Tries from Ernst van Rhyn and teenage debutant Ollie Davies put them in command.
However, the visitors responded well with a pair of scores before half-time. Forward Hiddleston and back-rower Rory Darge both went over to narrow the gap.
Further second-half scores from Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall extended the Warriors' lead to 26-14. A late reply for Sale promised a nervous finish, but the visitors stood strong to secure a significant first-round victory.
The match began with a bang as skipper Ernst van Rhyn scored from close range after just two minutes. An early injury to centre Rekeiti Ma'asi-White introduced 19-year-old Ollie Davies into the fray for his cup debut.
Davies made an instant contribution. Switching to fly-half, he took a good angle to collect an pass and score, making Sale's lead.
Against challenging conditions, Glasgow used their forward power to get back into the contest. A powerful line-out drive was finished by front-rower Hiddleston. Just before the break, Rory Darge forced his way over, with Hastings' conversion making it a narrow deficit at the interval.
The Scottish club seized the advantage for the first occasion early in the restart. A poor box-kick was gathered by No. 8 Jack Dempsey, who fed skipper Steyn to burst through a tackle and race away to the try-line.
Now in the ascendancy, Glasgow clinched the fourth try when Stafford McDowall ran through a defender to score his 100th appearance for the club. That score capped a sequence of twenty-six unanswered points.
Sale gave themselves a late hope when Louw showed neat skills to score. The conversion made it a five-point game with time remaining.
One last opportunity arose for them from a throw in the 22, but they failed to secure the possession, sealing Glasgow's triumph.
Sale must regroup ahead of a journey to face Clermont next Saturday. In contrast, Glasgow will welcome European giants Toulouse to Scotstoun.
Both sides are drawn in a competitive Pool One that also features Saracens and Durban-based team the Sharks.
