Since 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been hosting immersive events where experienced game masters manage fantasy roleplaying games in historic castles in England and at an American castle venue. These all-inclusive trips are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the moment to participate as players themselves, and they often look for guidance from the pros on topics ranging from improvisation and crafting riddles to managing conflicts at the table.
In response, the planners began crafting a systematic approach to address these questions, which led to the creation of the Dungeon Master Academy. The inaugural event is planned for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.
“You can watch thousands of YouTube videos on almost every theme and gain significant knowledge, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to an in-person experience together with fellow DMs, where there’s live engagement with faculty instructors and other game masters likely in comparable situations and seek to improve their skills,” noted the program's dean.
Game masters can opt for options ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to $2,500, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes one of four courses:
Every class includes eight hours of classwork spread over two days.
“The courses are designed so that you depart having immediate practical outcomes, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl said. “They’re not just lectures and they go beyond recorded content. These classes that you can participate in, learn from, and then go right back home the week after and put into practice in your local game.”
The majority of workshops are taught by a pair of experts. Universe creation is led by an industry veteran and Keith Baker, jointly leading the craft of setting creation.
Professional development includes four different teachers, such as Elisa Teague, Clint McElroy, and Hunter Fell. The extra instructors is meant to provide specialized information to attendees with definite objectives.
“Some of them plan to create their own real-play series and share their stories with the world, others want to publish and develop fresh ideas,” Carl stated. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at an event like an immersive experience? What are the skills that I need? Is it for everyone?”
A fifteen hundred dollar premium package includes access to a welcome reception, a introductory package, and a half-hour consultation appointment with a teacher. This represents the debut of the program, though the company has previously run similar events during breaks between campaigns at their castle events.
“You could almost run an complete event just on office hours for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the most effective utilization of everybody’s time – I think the formal instruction and the practical exercises is too valuable – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier includes an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to manage an adventure for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and instruction.
“The aim is for the teacher to evaluate whatever the DM is focused on: I struggle with improv or I encounter obstacles in this kind of combat situation. May I present a situation for you and get feedback on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to get feedback and guidance on a specific world that they’ve been developing.”
Responses from the first event will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl suggested that likely modifications could include expanding one-on-one sessions, lengthening the event to three days, or testing varied class arrangements.
“I hope that we host such events frequently,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see numerous academy events in a given year, in different cities, and in different countries. The reception has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I feel it would be wonderful to be able to do this in partnership with large gatherings.”
