A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
