Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
