The child of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related allegations at the start of her trial in the port city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she made on digital networks several years back during violent protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her dad.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, left at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this violence and faces accusations of encouragement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.

Context of the Proceedings

The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the former president's arrest for ignoring a court order to give evidence at an probe into claims of corruption while he was in power.

The defendant has repeatedly rejected the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past describing the government's legal argument as weak.

She has also frequently claimed the accusations against her were an attempt to settle political scores with her parent after he founded his own political organization and competed against the ANC.

Support and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial targeting" against the ex-leader and his family.

A small number of followers from her group, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has argued that the proof presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Social media comments from 2019 form the basis of the government's evidence
  • Deadly demonstrations in 2021 resulted in significant casualties and monetary destruction
  • The accused is charged with multiple charges of incitement to violence
  • Judicial trials are anticipated to continue for several days

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the judicial authority in what is anticipated to be a closely watched judicial process with significant policy consequences for South Africa.
