The gravest possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, encompassing a searing 4C jump in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea levels. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.

Possible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These effects, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as improbable but plausible. The scientists stated that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are credible," said Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "The nation has been making preparations in the absence of the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities.
