The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Team

England have opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.

In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable decision.

Spin Options Weighed

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.

But McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
