Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
