Winter Storms Claim Five Victims in the Gaza Strip Amid Dire Conditions in Makeshift Camps.

Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters housing Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four people. This tragedy highlights the dangerous situation that continue after over two years of intense bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Relief from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been in effect since October, aid groups report that residents broadly lack the sufficient housing required to withstand frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has enabled us to experience death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 people of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 additional people were hurt in the event.

Family members on that day began removing the rubble that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in makeshift tents because their homes were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Aid groups say not enough building supplies are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, says more than 440 people have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals since the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than one hundred children below eighteen years old – sixty boys and forty females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire started because of armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and employment of bullets. These numbers, he explained, reflected cases where enough information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "So what the world now terms calm would be considered a crisis anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over two million individuals has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather at bay while facing shortages of assistance and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the winter months. It’s the third winter since the war involving Israel and the group began on 7 October 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and murdered around 1,200 people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
